Sixteen volunteers turned out Saturday for a roadside cleanup along Sawyer County Highway B near the LCO baseball fields, filling more than 20 extra-large bags over a roughly 2.5-mile stretch, according to Joan Cervenka, treasurer for the Sawyer County/LCO Democratic Party.

“It was a strong community turnout,” Cervenka said, noting crews worked both sides of the road and ensured “final collection of every bag before day’s end.”

Cervenka said several volunteers were “shocked and appalled by how much garbage” had accumulated in the ditches.

“Because of tall grass, vines, steep slopes, and prickly brush, especially around culvert outlets, it was nearly impossible to reach everything,” Cervenka added. “But the volunteers definitely made the road look better.”

After the work wrapped up, the crew gathered at the Dye Hards Golf Course restaurant for five pizzas provided by the Sawyer County and Lac Courte Oreilles Democratic Party.

“New friends laughed and chatted about the ‘trash and treasures’ they found,” Cervenka said, “and we talked about positive ways to get more people engaged in our community’s governance.”

The effort also included a small food drive to support local shelves.

“Volunteers donated a large box of food to the LCO Aging and Disabilities Center,” Cervenka said. “So many of our neighbors need a hand up in these difficult economic times.”
