TGB Seeks Input on Future of Old Reserve Elder Nutrition Center

The LCO Tribal Governing Board (TGB) is asking the community for input on the future of the former Reserve Elder Center which was recently conveyed ownership over to the Tribe from the Housing Authority.

Over the past couple of months, the LCO Housing Authority conveyed ownership of two community centers and the former Reserve Elder Nutrition Center over to the TGB.

The two community centers are located in New Post and Signor. All facilities were former HUD buildings owned and maintained by the Housing Authority.

The Reserve Elder Nutrition Program officially moved into its new facility next door to the old building in Reserve earlier this year.

A current proposal is to establish a temporary winter homeless shelter for this upcoming cold season.

LCO Vice Chairman Tweed Shuman said whatever plan is decided on will result in some renovation costs, depending on the extent of the direction the TGB decides to take.

A poll can be taken here in this week’s digital newsletter and there has also been a poll on the Lac Courte Oreilles Today Facebook group page.

The current ideas include the homeless shelter, a foster care home, remodeling into a duplex to address housing, a community and recreation center similar to the current ones in New Post and Signor or using it for office space.

After several days, here are the results at the Facebook poll; 115 votes for homeless shelter, 65 votes for community rec center, 39 votes for foster care home, 25 votes for assisted living care facility, 19 votes for a gym and workout area, 15 votes for kids indoor playground and swimming pool, 15 votes for remodel into housing duplex, 10 votes for a laundromat, 3 votes for office space.

A commenter on the Facebook poll said our elders deserve a functional assisted living / nursing home with on-site staff to assist with their needs.

“We should give back and keep our elders safe and as healthy as we can. Especially in those long cold months where food, socialization and transportation needs are most needed.

Elder care providers can visit on site and do their rounds for medical care,” the commenter said.

Jesse Taylor stated we should have a facility but not in that location.

“It should be attached, or near medical services such as the health center in addition to being much closer to the hospital,” Taylor said. “They’d also love the social opportunities of the casino and convention center where a shuttle service could be provided for them.”

One commenter said a youth center helped keep her out of trouble growing up.

Another added, this building should be a community building for people to hold wakes and do fund raising (cooking) and a teaching center to help teach kids to cook, sew, etc...

Kevin Crone said when he was young there was a lot more for kids to do but now there’s not and they turn to drugs and getting into trouble out of boredom.

“Turn some buildings into places these kids can hang out with some friends. A place they can feel safe and not be roaming the streets,” Crone said.
