LCO Tribal Governing Board (TGB) member Tweed Shuman was recently appointed to the Statewide City/Village Multimodal Local Supplement (MLS) Committee, which meets to give ratings for project applications and recommends them to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Secretary’s Office.

“The one-time MLS funding is available to cities/villages statewide through a competitive discretionary application process. The committee's evaluation of projects is critical to ensuring that state funds go to projects that directly benefit local communities,” explained Ryan Spaight, WisDOT.

Shuman serves as Tribal representation on the statewide committee. He stated the committee met last week and reviewed over 400 project applications involving pedestrian, bicycle and ATV trails as well as road projects to improve safety. Of those applications, Shuman said 30 projects were recommended for approval and many of them were in northern Wisconsin, several of which were Tribal projects.

“One of the considerations in reviewing projects is the economic impact the project will have in the local area,” Shuman stated.
