James Schlender Jr. was recognized on Friday, March 2, following his resignation as the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribe’s Attorney General, a position which he served the last 2.5 years. He was presented with a Pendleton blanket and some other gifts by members of the Tribal Governing Board (TGB).

Schlender resigned citing personal and health reasons, but stated he has an opportunity to achieve a master’s degree.

Prior to serving as Attorney General, Schlender served four years as the tribal attorney and three years as Chief Judge.

“We appreciate everything Jim has done. He’s done a lot for our Tribe,” TGB member Gary “Little Guy” Clause said.

Chairman Louis Taylor also thanked Schlender for all he’s done and said the Tribe may still need his help along the way if he’s willing to help.

Little Guy said Schlender is an expert in Indian Law.

Schlender said he needed to step away because he’s been sick for a while now.

“Your health is your wealth,” Schlender said.

He told the tribal office staff gathered for the recognition that they all do a great job. He cited their professionalism as something he’s never seen before recognizing the Accounting Staff, ICW, social services, compliance and all the rest.

“We are better than what we are given credit for and I’m proud to have been able to work with you all,” Schlender stated. “I’m excited for the future of our Tribe.”

He went on to credit the TGB for all they have done to expand the Tribe’s financial capacity.

“Other people see what we’ve done here at LCO. We are the pride of the Ojibwe. We face challenges and we overcome them,” Schlender said. “I’m thankful for having had the opportunity. We would not be as successful without the staff we have.”
