Tribal Aging Director's Report for February

Rosalie Gokee

Interim Tribal Aging Director

Currently, the LCO Aging & Disability Services Department has two home-delivered meal routes which cover a cumulative amount of 147 miles per day during operation. The Department serves anywhere from 140-150 meals per day and 140 are home-delivered meals. The increase in home-delivered meals is largely due to Covid 19. This increase impacts wait times for meals to the elder and aging population in the community. However, I have some great news to share! The LCO Aging & Disability Services Department has been approved for a grant through the Anti-Hunger Task Force. I became aware of the grant opportunity on January 12th and immediately forwarded the information to the Grants Department. We had to act quickly as there was a one-week turnaround. I want to commend Grant Writer Jordan St. Germaine for preparing the grant and submitting it timely!

The Anti-Hunger Task Force has upgraded our van request to a refrigerated van to ensure safe food temperatures. We have also been approved for two-door upright freezers, refrigerators, and other needed equipment. The acquisition of the new van will result in another home-delivered meal route which is greatly needed.

We recently had some staff that were out due to Covid. It was a challenging time, however, two of our staff stepped up to the plate, David Belille Sr. and Carolyn Nayquonabe, and I would like to recognize them for their hard work and dedication to ensure that a meal was prepared and available. They did an outstanding job!

Due to the Covid outbreak in the Department, bingo for the month of January was cancelled in consideration of the safety of elders and community who normally attend. However, we are back on track and bingo is scheduled for Thursday, February 17th from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Feel free to join us as socialization is so important for our wellbeing.

“Cooking & Moving with Chef Al & Kim” was also cancelled in January but will be starting back up on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, starting as 12:30 p.m. Come and check out Chef Al’s yummy creations and healthy recipes and get in some exercise with Kim.

Our shuttle bus is back from the shop! This means that the Department will be planning some outings in the future so stay tuned!

I would also like to announce that Carla Karazsewski has been hired full-time as the LCO Aging & Disability Services Department Nutrition Manager, effective January 3, 2022. The Department welcomes Carla as she comes with a positive attitude and is willing to learn and help any way she can.

If you have any questions regarding services at the LCO Aging & Disability Services Department, please do not hesitate to call (715) 865-3379.
