Statement from TGB Regarding Inflation Assistance Payment

The Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Governing Board (TGB) is aware of the growing concern of Tribal Members regarding the proposed Inflation Assistance Payment that was authorized by the TGB on October 10, 2023.

The TGB in regular session motioned to approve a one-time payment for enrolled Tribal Members to offset the rising living costs associated with inflation and other matters impacting our communities. The motion was unanimous and provided for conditions to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local laws. The source of funds for the payment will be Tribal funds.

There is growing concern about the dissemination of misinformation and varying viewpoints being expressed on social media concerning the TGB plan for this important financial assistance. The TGB is concerned that this information is creating confusion and anxiety. The Inflation Assistance Payment will be available as soon as specific logistical issues are resolved. The TGB would caution Tribal Members to be patient and wait for further updates. The TGB is the only authority to speak on this matter and the TGB is working diligently to ensure that this payment to enrolled Tribal Members is efficient and protects the membership.

Further information will be available on the Tribe's website. All Tribal Members are encouraged to wait for further information to be published. Staff at the Tribal Office have been directed to refer all such inquiries to the Tribe's website for further information. Multiple calls to Tribal staff, while appreciated, will not expedite the payment any sooner.

Fed Ex wants $126.00 to send my notarized proxy pick up authorization documents to a second party in Wisconsin to pick up my check. Getting it notarized cost me an additional $15.00. It will cost a relative another $70.00 in fuel to drive to the Res, and hope (pray) the check will be available for pick up when he arrives. (Admin. Lunch breaks, Coffee breaks). Thanks for making it convenient for Out-of-State Tribal family to get their checks! Any chance you could send it in the mail with my Christmas check, or my Birthday check, or my Senior Check, or even with the second assistance check which will be mailed to everyone who cannot be present in person? (I could send you…

If the second assistance check can be mailed to those who live out of State and cannot claim their checks in person, why couldn't the first set of assistance checks be mailed out to those Tribal members that cannot pick them up because they live out of State ?

We who cannot pick up our inflation checks. they will not be sending them. The money will go back in the general fund. Our tribal leaders have let down their people who cannot possibly get to the office to pick them up. I feel this is completely wrong. But I forgive the leaders.

My last comment I left, went through Facebook. For which, I would rather that any messages are posted directly to the TGB. Not on social media. That message was concerning that some tribal members, who don’t live on the reservation couldn’t afford to travel to physically pick up the check. Mail is the only option, unless TGB can direct deposit funds. Thank you for all that you do for us.

We want to know why checks aren’t being mailed and what happens to the money that doesn’t get picked up then? Because a lot of members arent able to go and pick up in person.

Sadly, I emailed Joe Morey in November 10th, asking him if they will be mailing the c that can’t be picked up because we live too far away. His reply was No checks not picked up will go back in the general fund. Let them know how you feel. Maybe they will have a change of heart and mail them to so many of us whi desperately are in need to buy food etc
